Hope all of you are having a great start to your 2015!  I haven't created an Inspiration Wall in a little while and it seems so appropriate this time of year.  So here's a bit of ingenuity to support us all…

Life does not consist mainly, or even largely, of facts and happenings. It consists mainly of the storm of thoughts that is forever blowing through one's head.
Mark Twain

There's another way to live. Accept indeterminacy as a principle, and you see your life in a new light, as a series of seemingly unrelated jewel-like stories within a dazzling setting of change and transformation. Recognize that you don't know where you stand, and you will begin to watch where you put your feet. That's when the path appears.
–  Aldous Huxley

Simplifying our lives does not mean sinking into idleness, but on the contrary, getting rid of the most subtle aspect of laziness: the one which makes us take on thousands of less important activities.
Matthieu Ricard

It seems to me that those songs that have been any good, I have nothing much to do with the writing of them. The words have just crawled down my sleeve and come out on the page.
Joan Baez

If you find yourself in some difficulty, step aside, and allow Buddha to take your place. The Buddha is in you.
Thich Nhat Hanh

The fundamental delusion of humanity is to suppose that I am here and you are out there.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

“I” is a word; it does not think, feel, do anything. Just a word preceding other words. Investigate this until it's clear.

Mmmm… Warming Spiced Ayurvedic Sleepytime Mylk is yumminess so soothing, delicious and comforting before bed I find myself turning in earlier just cause I can't wait to make it!  This mug of exotic spiced mylk sweetened with a touch of raw honey tingles the tastebuds and warms the insides.  Minutes later, tucked into soft jammies and lavender spritzed covers, I'm falling into a deep slumber of fantastical adventures… dreams so beautiful I don't wake up until dawn.  Ok, the falling asleep quickly part is definitely thanks to my Warming Spiced Ayurvedic Sleepytime Mylk, excellent for inducing sound, restful sleep.  The continuation of a night filled with brilliant dreams leads me to a subject of an upcoming post, however, I'll give you a sneak peek…

Yet another Ayurvedic technique to promote restful sleep is rubbing a little warm sesame oil (cold pressed) on the soles of the feet (which contain reflexology points connecting all over the body).  I add  a few drops of pure **Frankincense Essential Oil to enhance this and I'm experiencing the affect of ultimate relaxation and beautiful dreams.  I adore a night of deep sleep filled with intense dreaming, magical adventure that can't be bothered by waking up in the middle… designed by the universe just for us, stimulating our creative brain until it's perfectly time to open our eyes, look out the window, in a purely refreshed state of excitement for the daytime portion of our lives!  Beautifully restful those dreamy nights where anything and everything is possible, preparing our subconscious for the grounded adventure of sunlit days. That's what sesame oil and frankincense do for me – it's no wonder the three wise men brought baby Jesus Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold.  I'll share in an upcoming post, which essential oils (EO's) I use in addition to the amazing power they have.  Not all EO's are created equally for there is a highly refined art to how they're grown, distilled and combined.  Therefore, it's important to properly source them.  However, I've already delved much farther into this subject than intended, so stay tuned for more exciting details soon!

**Frankincense oil is an ancient oil which has been used for over 5000 years for restoration of the immune system, enhancing skin care, and harnessing spiritual connection to help us release parts of our ego which hold us back from connecting with our soul, as well as releasing feelings of unworthiness and insecurity. Often used in meditation, it's useful for visualizing, improving spiritual connection, centering, and providing comforting properties that help focus the mind and overcome stress and despair. The uses and benefits of Frankincense date long before the time of Christ to the Egyptians and Sumerians. Today, scientific research has shown Frankincense contains 8% sesquiterpenes which stimulate the part of the brain that controls emotions, and 78% monoterpenes which are known to be calming and restorative.

What I will say – on a seemingly different subject and yet not since everything in life is so inextricably intertwined – is that awakening (pun intended) is pure joy!  All the tidbits I share on StyleNectar are simple ways to Live Beautifully, to help us experience the profound joy that is our birthright.  People, do not give up.  Even if you feel hopeless, do not give up.  Trust me I've been there.  We all have.  However, our problems are indeed opportunities in disguise. They inspire us to look beyond the limitations of conditioned mind – beyond simply meeting ego's needs – as it dawns on us that ego's needs can NEVER be met.  It will never be enough.  Ego's appetite is insatiable and its promises empty. The good news, however, is our freedom, our bliss, lies not in some external person, achievement or thing.  Freedom is in our own hands – we're at the mercy of no one, no thing!  It's designed that way – and in fact it's our life purpose to realize.  Some might call it learning to love ourselves.  I would say it's realizing we are love.  Meditation weans us from our addiction to distraction, disatisfaction, drama, and living in stories of past and future.  Finding freedom is SO much more fun than the futility of attempting to appease ego.  It's why many people who so called "have it all" are still not satisfied, blind to the simple, beautiful fact that we had it all from the very beginning.  We always have.  Always will.  The heart.  Love.  Through meditation we experience this disrobing of the layers of disatisfaction, to bathe in love, be one with who we are.  Experiencing our true nature.  Our highest potential.  When we bring true nature to our human experience we open our eyes to everything that has been within and around us all along.  The magic of life force, of being alive.  We see that it's about the process, each moment. Forget the results, they're just another addiction to tear us away from the moment.  When we leave the moment we disconnect from the source and dive headfirst into suffering.  Meditation and living in tune with nature reinforce our oneness with the source, opening ourselves up to a magical way of living not possible, or encouraged – by the conditioned world.

Ayurvedic Spiced Sleepytime Mylk w Turmeric, Cardamom & Ginger

The science of Ayurveda, based on the ancient healing traditions of India, supports living in sync with nature, adjusting our way of living to balance the affect changes in our environment have on our doshas (doshas being the three mind-body types: vata, pitta & kapha).  These changes in the rhythms and forces of nature such as the shift from morning to night and the inevitable seasons have a profound impact on us.  According to Ayurveda, a key to good health, peaceful mind and higher level functioning is to live in harmony with these patterns of nature.  This means continually balancing our inner ecology and our doshas to adjust to our ever changing environment.

Fall provokes the qualities of the vata dosha, characterized by such physical attributes as dryness, cold, subtlety, mobility, lightness, clarity, instability & astringency.  Thus, Ayurvedic guidelines for autumn revolve around pacifying vata and grounding by keeping warm, calm, maintaining a regular routine, eating warming foods & spices and avoiding extreme cold, cold foods and too many raw foods.  While there are many incredible reasons to include loads of raw foods into our diets, I'm not  dogmatic about a 100% raw food philosophy.  Currently, I'm experimenting with a 70% raw food, 30% cooked food breakdown.  That said, don't forget, just because food is raw, doesn't mean it has to be cold – soups, entrees etc. can all be warm, yummy and comforting and stay raw.  I'll be bringing more of these warming dishes to you this season.

Autumnal shifts in my diet are accompanied by going to bed a bit earlier, the addition of cozy blankets, sweaters, scarves and slippers; you won't catch me without a mug of something warm such as green tea or this Ayurvedic Spiced Mylk.  I find myself wearing my hair down in its natural waves around my neck and ears like an extra scarf to keep me warm.  Dinnertime brings warming stews spiced with seeds of cumin, mustard & coriander, or spicy thai noodles w/ shiitakes and coconut cream sauce (yes coming soon!)… It's a gorgeous, cold, light, blustery and dry time of the year. Leaves sparkling and rustling in the autumnal gusts. Even my kitty changes her routine, heading back to nap in her pillow-lined basket in the kitchen.

Sleepytime Ayurvedic Warming Spiced Mylk with Turmeric, Ginger & Cardamom

With these adaptations to the change in seasons I've been inspired to incorporate additional Ayurvedic structure to my days.  I experience an incredible amount of life force on a 100% raw foods diet combined with my dedicated meditation practice.  It's probably something one has to experience to be able to relate to… spiritual breakthroughs of a whole new level, such oneness with nature it's frequency pulses through my veins.  However, from an Ayurvedic perspective, though we do live in heated homes, a 100% raw food diet might not be best in winter.  While I did remain close to 100% raw last winter, as I was brand new to it and unwilling to let go of the high frequency living a raw food diet was providing, old school Ayurvedic science would feel this could provoke too much vata.  On the other hand there are "living" Ayurvedas who would completely endorse 100% raw year round for the level of prana it provides.  Which side to take?  As Ghandi said, "My life is experiments in truth".  So this year I'm experimenting, taking the middle way by incorporating more grounding cooked food into my routine.  I find life is constant change, refinement, which forces us to stay awake, keep our eyes open.  Far better than falling asleep on auto-pilot thinking we've figured it all out.  So here's a peek at the rest of the Ayurvedic inspired daily routine I'm transitioning into:

Ayurveda would recommend waking up early, around 5 am to experience the calm stillness of the morning this time of year.  I'm working on that, finding 6:00 am is my current goal 🙂  A bit of yoga is advised upon waking, which I find quite wonderful, only 10-20 minutes or so, focusing on the following asanas especially soothing of vata: Cat and Cow, Spinal Twist, Cobra, Vajrasana, Forward & Backward Bend, and Lotus. Shoulder Stand and Headstand are good in moderation.  Additionally, Sun Salutations in sets of 12 at minumum for good exercise or a maximum to the number of one's age -tho work up gradually if you try that! I follow yoga with bathing & oil pulling, breakfast & meditation.  If I've gotten up early enough I'll take an early walk in nature, otherwise, I'll soak up the sunshine on a lunchtime walk.  After a day's work, supported by my essential oils (again more on these soon!) I have dinner (sometimes raw, sometimes cooked, always warm) relax, and aim to go to bed within an hour after sunset – yes that early! It's fantastic. Just before bed it's a short second meditation then my delicious Warming Spiced Sleepytime Mylk.  As mentioned, it completely helps me sleep through the night – and even if it didn't I'd still drink it cause it's SO darn comforting, yummy and freakin delicious people!  Yes, it does have turmeric in it- which is of course unbelievable for us on so many levels, and it tastes phenomenal.  If you think you wouldn't like it with turmeric, try it, I think you'll be surprised 🙂

Lastly, after having my sleepytime mylk… I wash up for bed and rub the soles of my feet with the aforementioned sesame oil and frankincense to cleanse my body, sleep like a baby, and dream like I'm in a whole new world.  As I said, more on the essential oils coming soon…

**Turmeric has a vast variety of uses. In general it's a good anti-inflammatory. In traditional medicine, it's used to treat liver disorders, parasitic infections, ulcers, skin problems, bruises, joint pain and inflammation, sprains & strains, cold & flu symptoms and as a general digestive aid. Scientific research shows that turmeric aids in breaking down liver toxins, strengthening gallbladder function, aiding lipid (aka fat) metabolization, and preventing blood clotting. Recent studies show turmeric may help prevent lung, breast colon, and other forms of cancer.

PS.  I can't possibly discuss Indian science without mentioning one of my top (as in top 3) favorite books, the Baghatvad Gita (translation by Eknath Eswaran). Life changing. Just like us. Just like nature.

Recipe for Warming Spiced Ayurvedic Sleepytime Mylk

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of almond, coconut or your fav non-dairy mylk
  • pinch of cardamom
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • pinch of black pepper
  • pinch of ginger
  • pinch of turmeric
  • raw honey

Method

  1. Pour your favorite mylk into a small pot.
  2. Add spices to taste and whisk to combine. Start with less and experiment with more later.  I actually use 1/2 tsp of each spice which makes my mylk bright yellow and I LOVE it! However, a pinch is all you need.
  3. Bring mylk to baby bottle temperature to keep it raw. If you don't care about it staying raw, bring it to a light steam.
  4. Add a raw honey to taste & give mylk another whisking.
  5. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy heavenly sleepytime yummminess! Sweet Dreams 🙂

Fresh Cream of Corn Chowder with a Kick… + a side of my secret recipe Raw Vegan Onion Rings!

Fresh Cream of Corn Chowder with a Kick is a celebration of summer in a bowl!

This simple and delicious recipe takes full advantage of local farmers' markets, currently overflowing with the plumpest, juiciest ears of succulent corn.  Golden jewels so honey-sweet and tender they're best fresh off the cob.  If you've ever eaten corn fresh, standing in the middle of (an organic) corn field you understand perfectly why subjecting these pale golden delicacies to steaming kettles of boiling water or smoking hot grills is a practical crime.  Besides, who seriously wants to deal with hot steam or smoking grills on a beautiful summer day?!

**Do you spot my napkin (below) on which a vintage letter from Mark Twain is printed?  More on this in my personal comments after the recipe 🙂

IMG_6661

Beautiful, fresh foods brimming with life force have taken me to physical, mental & spiritual levels I never imagined possible!

This cool, creamy bowl of goodness boasts a wonderfully thick chowder texture, the freshest, sublime corn flavor and a perfect kick of smoked paprika & tabasco.  I've paired it here with my Raw Vegan Onion Rings (the recipe for which I'm equally excited to share with you soon!).  As with all StyleNectar raw vegan dishes, Fresh Cream of Corn Chowder is incredibly nutritious.  Sweet corn is loaded with lutein and zeaxanthin, two phytochemicals that promote healthy vision.  Corn also contains significant amounts of vitamin B1, Folate, Vitamin C and dietary fiber.

Of course, this fantastic chowder needn't be relegated to summer months only.  Simply substitute organic, frozen corn, which has been frozen at the peak of ripe flavor, retaining all it's amazing enzymes and nutrients, and warm up to 105F (the temperature of a baby bottle) to keep it raw.

IMG_6664

Eating a Raw Vegan diet tastes and makes me feel so amazing, I could never go back.  This is my submission to the lovely Jacqueline at No Croutons Required and Lisa of FoodandSpice.

Recipe for Fresh Cream of Corn Chowder with a Kick

(Serves 2)

Ingredients

  • 6 ears organic, sweet corn on the cob (make sure it's fresh, no more than 24 hours out of the field)
  • 1/2 + cup almond milk (click here for nut milk instructions) or sub filtered water which is just as tasty (add additional liquid beyond 1/2 c, slowly, til reach desired consistency, I'll guide you thru this below)
  • a dash or two of your favorite hot red pepper (I used a tiny dried tabasco from last year's garden)
  • frehly snipped chives, chopped & reserved for garnish
  • smoked paprika, reserved for garnish (if you're a stickler for 100% raw use unsmoked)

Method

  1. Place a kitchen towel over your cutting board and slice the corn off the cob with a sharp knife. The towel is a great trick to prevent the kernels from bouncing all over the kitchen 🙂
  2. Reserve 2 ears worth of kernels and set aside.
  3. Place remaining 4 ears worth of kernels into high speed blender along with 1/2 cup almond milk (or filtered water depending on what you're using) and a dash or two of your favorite hot, red pepper. Buzz it up til thoroughly combined. Taste to check & adjust seasoning/consistency. You'll probably need to add a touch more liquid til you reach your exact consistency. I start with 1/2 cup so as to not add too much too soon. This is a cream of corn chowder after all :)
  4. Mound the reserved kernels from 2 ears of corn into each of the two serving bowls.
  5. Ladle the blended chowder mixture carefully around the mounds.
  6. Garnish with freshly snipped chives and a dusting of smoked paprika.

   Enjoy!

An update on my summer adventures… living without air conditioning is still a dream come true.  I simply won't tire of feeling the fresh breeze on my skin, the scent of nectar and rich soil deep in the lungs, twittering baby robins caressing my ear…  The closer we are to nature the more abundance we experience.  magical life force.  that which scientists are still unable to discern.  the mystery of life.  and great unknown.

the challenge of uncertainty. in a perfectly, beautiful, big Adventure.

So what are my tricks to stay sane during these last few days of high humidity in the mid 90's?  A couple well placed (and pretty) fans are key.  Also, taking advantage of when it's cool… It's truly remarkable how much the temperature dips at night, so letting in all that fresh, clean goodness overnight creates a fantastic cooling affect in the home.  Of course this nocturnal cooling creates for gorgeous mornings, so I take full advantage of the shady 6:45 am calm on a long walk serenaded by birds.  After that, a refreshing cool shower.  During the day…  Fresh juices on the rocks, frosty smoothies, cool crisp salads, juicy fruits, chilled soups and creamy Nice-creams. So delicious and perfectly designed to keep body temperature balanced, hydrated and comfortable. (check out the StyleNectar Recipe Index for 50+ Juice, Smoothie, Chilled Soups & Salad Recipes!)  The body grows responsive and adapts to the fluctuations of nature if we let it.  We're part of nature after all – it's not as though there's the universe, earth and then MAN.  No, we're all life, part of a cycle that works in harmony.  By resisting the wisdom of life, in our futile attempts to control it, we cause ourselves much unecessary suffering.  Conversely, letting go of all our conditioned (no pun intended) beliefs and assumptions allows us the spaciousness to tune into a much higher vibration of wisdom, an intuitive knowing with which we're all equipped. A peace and all-encompassing love in which all is perfect just as it is.

We have so many friends around us.  The tiniest of spotted baby deer wobbles zig-zagging about after Mama.  Black and white woodpeckers wearing great red beaks slide up & down tree trunks in stacatto calling out tropical cackles.  A few days ago, Jim found a huge, slow turtle the size of a tire crossing the drive to reach the other side of the small brook that winds about our property.

love

this life.

PS. Did you happen to spot the napkin in my photos on which a letter from Mark Twain is printed?  It's one from a vintage set by great authors including D.H. Lawrence, Jack London & Emily Dickenson.  How fun to read correspondence with my lunch, trasported to London in the mid 1800's, via beautiful words from Mark Twain in New York. It's the sweetest of love notes.  Here it is in entirety (click image to enlarge text & read):

Eating Raw provides an amazing boost in energy.

And, as always, brimming with Rawsome, enzyme rich, living foods power!

Check it out…

IMG_6597

Raw live foods are much easier to digest or assimilate putting less burden on our digestive system and more time into cleaning or repairing our body.

Cauliflower, like its fellow cruciferous members is full of nutrients including minerals, vitamins, phytochemicals and antioxidants.  It's rich in vitamins C (one serving containing 77% RDA), K, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, and folic acid.  Cauliflower contains a compound called glucoraphanin, a precursor of sulforaphene found to have protective effect on the lining of the stomach wall.  Sulforaphene also prevents the growth of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori which can cause gastroenteritis.

IMG_6608

Live, raw food does not spoil or decompose quickly. It's packed with energy, minerals, vitamins, and everything we need to stay healthy.

Cauliflower is also rich in antioxidant phytochemicals like quercetin, caffeic acid and kaempferol which prevent development of cancer by destroying free radicals directly attacking the DNA of cells.  And that's just a fraction of the power of the cauliflower alone!  We've yet to delve into the realm of the vitamin C and lycopene rich tomatoes, the bone building, protein rich avocados, and the all other powerhouse ingredients in this superfood recipe!

Suffice it to say, Southwestern Cauliflower Couscous is as delicious to eat as it is at creating our healthy bodies, vitality and joy:)

Eating Raw provides an amazing boost in energy.  I have more energy now than I've ever experienced in my life.

Hello dear friends!  I'm back!  Please pardon my brief hiatus… things have been very busy here with lots of exciting changes in the air.  While it's too soon to share any details yet, at least I can say I've been walking further down my spiritual path, getting closer to what my heart desires… embracing freedom by continuing to let go of my little old- and highly addictive- ego.  Speaking of which, ego's unhelpful little voice is yammering at me right now, "What the heck does any of this have to do with Red Bell Pepper Soup?"  Nothing!  It's a blog, dear ego.  And thank you, as always, for your ever-so-helpful non-stop commentary.  However, I have a post to attend to so buh - bye 🙂

So yum yummy and pretty too!

So, back to the subject of this post… As you've noticed, I've been rolling out all the recipes from my yummy raw vegan holiday feast, each of which can be incorporated, deliciously, into our repetoire all year long.  My Cream of Roasted Red Bell Pepper Soup is completely fabulous.  Full of 'roasted' flavor from my (no longer) secret ingredients Smoked Paprika and a shot of smoky Coconut Aminos.  Creamy decadence abounds with the addition of omega 3, copper, iron and manganese laden raw cashews.  Red Bell Pepper is the star of the show showing off its tantalizing color and vitamin C power.  Add along some water and a few spices to your Vitamix, whiz until steamy and, Bam!  Instant bowl of warm, longevity-building, glow-enhancing goodness!

I want to share one more quick thought, or a reminder really, on incorporating Raw Vegan Living Foods into your diet, right before I get to the recipe.   You all have accompanied me on my ever-evolving journey to optimal health thus far and, as promised, I'll continue to share everything I experience and learn along the way.  Obviously, by now you've picked up on the fact that I continue eating a Raw Vegan diet because it makes me feel amazing, both physically, mentally and spiritually.  Remember my first green drink?  Rocket Fuel!  It's what got me instantly hooked!  However, my head was definitely ahead of my body – I wanted to dive full-on in to 100% Raw – and I did.  Everything went swimmingly for a good while actually- until I hit a major detox, randomly out of the blue, which told me to scale back.  This is par for the course, however, it can be alarming if one isn't prepared for it.  I got back on track and plunged ahead once again with full abandon… and the same thing happened again and again.  I've experienced everything from hives (which I've never previously had in my life) to sinus issues, joint pains, headaches and more.  I always know it's detox (also known as a healing crisis or, in medical terms, a Herxheimer Reaction) because I'm leading such an insanely clean lifestyle (no dairy, no sugar, no meat, no coffee, no gluten, no allergenic grains, no unsoaked nuts, no processed food, alcohol etc) – plus I've read a billion detox books to know what's going on.  Although, I take that back about the insanely clean part- on a couple of trips I did have some of those aforementioned items- and that can throw a person into detox as well- if a body is insanely clean- it actually can't handle toxicity as well.  The body repells the foreign invader with mucus production or through the skin in a rash etc because the body is no longer tolerant to it.  Think about trying a cigarette for the first time or having your first drink of alcohol.  Same thing.  So, what I want to make clear is it's not really a great idea to push our bodies too hard in this way.  Either in the beginning or once we're really clean, going back to our former ways, as we can pull up too much toxicity at once causing a compounding effect.  Some of us will experience less detox than others, however we do all want to pay close attention to the cues our body provides.  This journey is about being in tune with life, in tune with our real homes, our bodies.  For some of us, we may never want to be 100% Raw Vegan or even 100% vegetarian for that matter.  Everyone has unique nutritional needs, a unique history, etc.  This isn't a contest.  It's about treating ourselves with loving kindness, respect and care.  Not perfectionism.  The bottom line is it's healthy to incorporate lots of raw fruits, veggies, high quality grains (quinoa, millet & buckwheat are my favs, packed with amino acids, calcium, iron etc) and sprouted nuts, seeds & legumes.  I have to admit continually paying the price for going too strong because I just feel so darn good, yet it can result in detoxing too much too fast!  So let me be your example to incorporate changes sloooooowly.  And then, once our cells are squeaky clean, it's probably best not to go back to our old ways as our bodies become more sensitive and won't be able to handle toxicity in the same manner.

Without further ado…

Recipe for Cream of Roasted Red Bell Pepper Soup (serves 2)

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups chopped red bell pepper (reserve 1/2 cup to add in at end for texture)
  • 1/3 cup cashews or macadamia nuts (soaked overnight)

  • 1 cup water (plus a bit more on hand to adjust to perfect consistency)

  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika

  • a splash of Coconut Aminos (lower in  sodium) or Braggs Aminos
 (high in sodium)
  • garlic powder to taste

  • himalayan salt to taste

  • 1 scallion sliced thinly, reserved for garnish

Method

  1. Add everything except extra reserved diced bell pepper and sliced scallion to Vitamix or high speed blender.
  2. Whiz until steamy.
  3. Pour into pretty bowls or plain bowls since the soup is so pretty it really doesn't matter! Garnish with sliced scallion.
  4. Enjoy yummy warm goodness in your tummy with a special friend.  Or save the 2nd serving for yourself.  I won't tell 🙂

Would you rather have the recipe for my raw Sesame-Flax Crackers or probiotic rich, Herbed 'Goat' Cheese in my next post?  Or both!  Let me know and I'll post whichever receives the most votes.

Also, let me know if you have any questions about anything raw vegan or simply tell me how you're doing! One thing is certain, I'll be happy to hear from you and you can count on my thoughtful reply 🙂
